Blogs
For a summary of blogs about Ukraine that I like, check out Ukraine List’s blog entry. It isn’t a comprehensive listing, but it will give more information than what is written below. Eventually, I will be adding these blogs to this page also.
As of December 2006, this page has been reorganized. I wanted a bit more order without having tons of links on the right sidebar.
With that said, one site is truly invaluable and that is globalvoicesonline.org. Global Voices collects blog entries grouped by country from all over the world and is a not-for-profit organization. It also has RSS feeds and podcasts and some of the postings have been translated into English. If you want to find blogs on Ukraine, start here. Of course, you can go to bloglines and technorati also, but Global Voices deserves a lot of support.
The new organization of this page will break blogs down into various categories: general, travel, political/current events, Peace Corps/study, religious, personal, adoption, and photo. Some will have descriptions, others will not.
General
abdymok.net/texts
Abdymok is an interesting blog that I quite like. It is sort of random, but then again most blogs are. The posts seem relatively frequent.
vkhokhl.blogspot.com
Neeka’s Backlog is another worthwhile site. I also think the list of blog links on this site is one of the best. The posts sometimes have nothing to do with Ukraine, but that’s not a problem. What I like most is that the author (Veronica Khokhlova) often succeeds in making a rather routine subject interesting. Veronica is also a frequent contributer for Global Voices. She’s a dedicated blogger doing an admirable job discussing Ukraine.
ukraine.com/blog/Features
This blog posts about more on culture and travel related issues, which is nice. I find the features pretty interesting. You can also get RSS feeds for the blog.
cybercossack.com
Cyber Cossack is one my favorites. It’s all over the place but interesting.
carpetblog.typepad.com
The Carpetblogger is moving to Istanbul, but you can still read his many past posts.
dykun.blogspot.com
Dykun is a very good blog, and I am quite impressed with the effort the author, Stefan, puts towards quality postings. His posts seem to reflect a level of thoughtfulness that other blogs often miss. Stefan is Ukrainian-American and thus, many of his posts deal with America, but he also has a leftist/progressive leaning, which gives his writing and analysis a refreshing counter-culture flavor.
notesfromkiev.blogspot.com
Notes from Kiev is a common link, but it is out of date. I don’t check it.
Travel
blogs.bootsnall.com/tags/Ukraine
BootsnAll has a section where you can see all the blog entries tagged with Ukraine.
gridskipper.com/travel/kiev
Gridskipper is an Urban Travel guide and it features a Kiev index that has the posts of Carpetblogger. The Carpetblog is an interesting site with a lot about the former Soviet countries. It’s nice and refreshing. Probably one of the only blogs I really like.
Political/Current Events
leopolis.blogspot.com
Leopolis is a blog about Ukraine, but the author is now in Washington, DC. It is a good blog that focuses on current topics and politics among other things. You will need to know Russian to read some of his posts. I also like the links portion. It has a good listing of blogs, photoblogs, news sources and other web-based info.
blog.kievukraine.info
The Kiev Ukraine News Blog is just that: a blog about Ukrainian news.
onlyinukraine.blogspot.com
The Only in Ukraine blog has a collection of strange stories involving Ukraine and Ukrainians.
orangerevolution.us/blog
A nice site with a good list of links (though most are not in English), reasonably updated and obviously focused on the orange part of Ukraine. One bad point is that it doesn’t seem to be updated much anymore.
orangeukraine.squarespace.com
Orange Ukraine seems good and up to date.
vilhelmkonnander.blogspot.com
Vilhelm Konnander’s Weblog. It is a bit out of date as of December 2006.
foreignnotes.blogspot.com
Foreign Notes.
Peace Corps/Study Blogs
mfarrell.typepad.com
Ukraine Blog 2006 is a study tour blog where a variety of researchers, writers, and administrators write blog posts about Ukraine, so in general it is a bit more informed and formal than personal blogs.
peacecorpsjournals.com/up.html
I won’t bother linking them all, but here is a good portal to all Peace Corps blogs throughout the world, including Ukraine.
Religious Blogs
greetings-from-ukraine.blogspot.com
Greetings from Ukraine is by a missionary, but it isn’t all about religion. It has an interesting set of links about Ukrainian street children too. Michelle Knisley, the authory, also posts frequently even during the winter months.
ukrainestreetchildren.blogspot.com
Ukraine Street Children is a new blog from Michelle Knisley above.
ukrainiac.blog.com
Heart of the Matter by Marianna Peipon.
caranews.blog.com
The View From Here by Cara Denney.
jakeknotts.blogspot.com/
Chernigov by Jake and Anya Knotts.
footesinukraine.blogspot.com
Notes from the Footes in Ukraine by Daniel and Annaliese Foote.
temerson.blogspot.com
Tim Emerson’s Ukraine Journal.
jeannepeipon.blogspot.com
Ukrainian Adventure by Jeanne Piepon.
Personal
petrosjotter.blogspot.com
Petro’s Jotter is a blog that has an expat family/business theme to it. I personally enjoy this blog as my interests are much in line with the author’s. The posts are written well, and thus easy to read. Obviously, those with kids or those who own a small business may find this blog more interesting, but I think the author gives expat life and work in Ukraine a good name and makes it sound fun.
nezalezhnosti.blogspot.com
Nezalezhnosti is a blog by an Australian. It’s a new blog and she posts frequently.
Adoption
americanexpat.blog-city.com
The American Expat blog is on a topic that doesn’t really concern me, but it has an impressive list of family blogs detailing Ukrainian adoption stories. Even though adoption laws have changed a bit in Ukraine, I think it would be a useful resource for those still seeking support during an adoption process.
Photo/Culture
xblot.com/xblog
Blot of Light is Alex Baranov’s photoblog. He has a lot of nice photos.
olechko.org
Olechko has a photo archive you can reach from the main page, and the blog covers lots of art, media, and culture subjects. I find the site interesting and the posts are frequent.
