Travel Guides
Travel guides and internet-based information are in many ways the bread and butter of travel planning — at least at first. My objective is to give a better idea of what is out there and evaluate the sources for usefulness. Unfortunately, the web is full of poor locational guides. Either the sites are just throwing some content up to get a web presence, or they start with grand ambitions and quickly fizzle out after trying to summarize a complex history, review any number of hotels and restaurants, and listing the location of embassies in Kyiv. Maybe the internet travel guide business will improve over time, but for now Ukraine guides are very weak. With that said, the most useful page is in this section is still the internet guide/portal page.
Internet sources with active forums tend to be extremely valuable, so the forum page is also a good place to start. Basically, you can ask very specific questions and get insider tips; however, in the end, you will still likely rely upon a hardcopy guide and some internet info too. Some sites like Virtual Tourist can hook you up with locals, which can be beneficial and break down any information gaps, but these networks are not for everyone. Essentially, there is no silver bullet for travel information, but using a package of resources will usually produce good results depending upon your unique needs.
I will have some other pages that deal with web searching, maps, travel magazines which can have Ukraine articles, and a basic review of the hardcopy guides out there. Lastly, I will also be providing information from local sources that I have collected in Ukraine. There are dining guides and various publications that produce timely and good information, but these sources are usually only accessible when you are in country. Hopefully, I can pass this local advantage on a bit to those outside Ukraine.
