In 1894 Tsar Nicholas II decided to build a great winery in the Crimea. Lacking proper storage facilities, local miners were called in to dig three layers of cool, humid cellars. He wanted some vino for his Livadia Palace — fair enough. The resulting winery, Massandra, is pictured below.
