About Our Service
Welcome
This site is for everyone living in, traveling to, or thinking about going to Ukraine. As I have prepared to relocate to Ukraine myself, I have found myself scouring guidebooks, travel forums, internet news sources, and hundreds of websites to find interesting and useful information about Ukraine. It never ceases to amaze me how many people dedicate their time and resources to putting valuable information on the web. Sure, many sites are commercial too, but the abundance of information is truly staggering.
The mission of this site is to act as a sort “first-stop” portal and information consolidator for all things related to travel and living in Ukraine. Everything from birding, hiking, and sailing to childcare resources, restaurants, and shipping household goods will be covered.
The beauty of the web is that you can find useful information that you may never have found otherwise, but the dark side of the web is that good information can be buried and have virtually no value to most of the world. This site will attempt to reduce this problem as much as possible for one place in the world: Ukraine. To this end, I will follow a short set of rules in deciding which websites and content to provide.
Our Content Rules
- As English is my language, I will primarily list sites that are in English. When there is no alternative, I will include a foreign language site or when a site is extremely useful I will also include it.
- I really dislike sites with a lot of broken links, and I will do everything to minimize these occurrences. Every two to three months I will manually check all of my links to ensure they still work. I will note link problems, redirect pages, and remove dead sites. You must weed the garden.
- I will focus my energies on what I think is the most valuable service: consolidating information and pointing people in the right direction. I will not do forums (other sites have good forums already). I will not regurgitate every bit of information out there such as visa rules, embassy addresses, Ukrainian history etc. I will not moderate comments on the blog.
- Any bias that occurs is solely resulting from my personal taste. I will not specifically recommend a site or service unless I feel it deserves it. Adds generated by Google or any other source are not my content. Adds through affiliate programs may be recommended products or services — but not always. How is that for ambiguity.
- URLs — while directed to specific pages — are usually shortened to the root domain name. In the event of a broken link, you should be able to track the page down using Google or another search engine.
A Note About Sources
I will draw my information from four broad areas in addition to my personal travel and living experiences.
- Guides (Local and International): Lonely Planet, Bradt, Hodges & Chumak, plus local guides such as Touring Kiev, dining guides, and the International Women’s Club of Kiev’s Survival Guide. In the future I may also draw upon French and German guides.
- Newspapers and Periodicals: What’s On Kiev, The Kyiv Post, international travel magazines, blogs, and many other sources.
- The World Wide Web: Yes, just brute Google searches are often necessary to find the hidden corners of the electronic world.
- Ukraine Forums: Traveler and expat forums exist to answer peoples questions on nearly every subject. The responses from the many ‘insiders’ in these forums can be extremely useful. Forums include Brama, Expat Ukraine, Boots ‘n All, Virtual Tourist, Lonely Planets’ Thorntree Forum, and some others.
Of Course the Caveats
- As I will be residing in Kiev, my information will be more weighted to the capital city. So goes the world.
- I cannot be responsible for anything arising from the use of a website listed on this site. You are all travelers and worldly types, so you will have to use your best judgment when entering into any transaction or agreement for service.
